Pan-African Fabric Fashion Showcase to hold on September 26

The pan African fashion show which will bring together nine African countries will take place in Washington on the 26 of September 2026. The event which will take centre stage at the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art in Washington, D.C., on September 26, will feature the inaugural Pan-African Fabric & Fashion Showcase.This was disclosed in Douala on Tuesday September 15 by the creator of the pan African innitiave Shiri Achu. She said the September 26 exhibition will showcase designs created by representatives from nine African countries including Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria and South Africa that participated in the competition held between May and July 2026. Working from a single textile, the Pan-African fabric, each designer was challenged to express and celebrate their country’s unique cultural identity. Through creativity, craftsmanship, and innovation, the collection highlights the richness and diversity of African heritage while demonstrating the unifying power of a shared continental symbol. The initiative, she went on, seeks to demonstrate how one shared fabric can tell diverse African stories while promoting unity across the continent.

The Pan-African Fabric is described as the first contemporary textile intentionally designed to bring together cultural symbols from North, East, West, Central and Southern Africa. Its creation draws on Shiri Achu’s artistic work and her vision of using creativity to promote cultural exchange, education and diplomacy. Since its launch at the Embassy of Cameroon in Washington, D.C., in April 2025, the initiative has involved artists, designers, museums, embassies, educational institutions and communities through exhibitions, workshops, competitions and public engagement programmes.According to Shiri Achu, the fabric is a “visual love letter to Africa”, celebrating the continent’s unity, diversity and creativity.The fashion showcase which will be organised as part of the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art Community Day, will run from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. It will mark the first time that the nine national fashion interpretations will be presented together before an international museum audience.Shiri Achu futher explained that beyond fashion, the initiative aims to use art and creativity as tools for preserving heritage, strengthening cultural connections and fostering dialogue among Africans and the wider world.
