World Press freedom day: CAMASEJ Douala Launches Free Health Screening for Journalists

As part of activities marking World Press Freedom Day 2026, the Cameroon Association of English Speaking Journalists- CAMASEJ Douala in partnership with the Acha Hospital Douala, successfully launched a free health screening campaign for journalists on April 29 in Douala.

Journalists from both Francophone and English-speaking media outlets turned out in numbers to benefit from the initiative, described as a key event in the week of activities commemorating World Press Freedom Day 2026.During the first day of screening, participating journalists underwent eye examinations, general body assessments, and checks on other vital health indicators. CAMASEJ Douala chapter president Maurine Ndi emphasized the campaign’s central message “health is wealth”.Speaking to the significance of the event, Maurine Ndi noted that journalism is often characterized by tight deadlines, constant pressure, and demanding mobility , factors that can affect workers’ wellbeing. The screening initiative, she said, serves as a timely reminder that journalists who maintain good health are better positioned to do their jobs effectively. In addition to helping journalists detect potential health concerns early, the campaign is also seen as reinforcing the broader values of press freedom by ensuring that those who inform the public remain healthy and capable of continuing their work. The free health screening campaign will continue for one week, offering more media professionals the opportunity to monitor their health and seek guidance in good time. Maurine Ndi expressed hope that the initiative will encourage journalists and media workers to prioritize preventive care and maintain wellbeing throughout their demanding professional schedules.
