The Catholic presence in Cameroon’s economic capital took a decisive turn with the gradual establishment of what is today known as the Archdiocese of Douala. A beacon of spirituality and devotion, which is at the center of the ecclesiastical province of Cameroon. As one of the country’s most prominent Catholic jurisdictions, Douala’s rich history, vibrant faith community, and commitment to social justice have earned it a revered place in the nation’s Catholic Church.Located in the economic capital of Cameroon, the Archdiocese of Douala is a metropolitan see that oversees several dioceses, including Bafang, Bafoussam, Nkongsamba, Edea and Eseke. With 16 deaneries it has a population of over 2 million Catholics, Douala is a hub of spiritual activity, with numerous parishes, schools, and charitable institutions serving the faithful. The seat of the archbishop is the Cathédrale Saint-Pierre et Saint-Paul in Douala, dedicated to Saint Peter and Saint Paul the central apostles whose feasts (especially their joint liturgical celebration) are consistently highlighted in diocesan devotion.

The Archdiocese of Douala has a long and storied history, dating back to 1931 when it was established as a prefecture apostolic. According to the Chancellor of the archdiocese of Douala Rev. Father Eboa Serge the jurisdiction began as the Apostolic Prefecture of Douala on March 31, 1931, was later elevated to the Diocese of Douala on September 14, 1955, and ultimately became the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Douala on March 18, 1982. Over the years, it has produced notable bishops, priests, and lay leaders who have contributed significantly to the growth of the Catholic Church in Cameroon. He noted that the first Cameroonian to receive a Catholic baptism was Andreas Kwa Mbangue, a native of Douala. This highlights the strong connection and attachment of the people of Douala to the Catholic Church.Today, the Archdiocese of Douala is led by Archbishop Samuel Kleda, who has been at the helm since 2009. Under his guidance, the archdiocese has continued to promote evangelization, ecumenism, and social justice, addressing pressing issues like poverty, inequality, and the ongoing crisis in the Northwest and Southwest regions. The Chancellor pointed out that the Archdiocese of Douala’s place in Cameroon’s ecclesiastical province is significant, as it serves as a model for other dioceses in the country. Its commitment to spiritual growth, education, and social development has inspired countless Cameroonians to live out their faith with purpose and conviction. As a metropolitan jurisdiction, the Archdiocese of Douala plays a coordinating role among its suffragan dioceses. This means that during national and regional Church moments, priests’ and bishops’ meetings, catechetical initiatives, social and charitable mobilizations, and major liturgical celebrations, Douala often serves as a reference point for unity and direction across the ecclesiastical province. As the Catholic Church in Cameroon continues to grow and evolve, the Archdiocese of Douala remains a shining example of what it means to be a community of faith, hope, and love . Like the rest of Cameroon’s Catholic Church, its calendar is not just a list of dates, it is the weekly and seasonal rhythm by which Christians deepen faith, celebrate the sacraments, and renew their mission in the world.
