On Wednesday, March 18, 2026, the GUIM’S SQUARE hotel complex in Logbessou, Douala V, became a hub for innovation as tourism professionals, experts, and students gathered for a high-level workshop. Under the evocative theme “Rio dos Camerões: One Destination, One Diversity, Many Flavors,” participants sought to redefine how Cameroon communicates its identity to the world. The central message was clear: tourism is no longer just about attractiveness it is about the responsible management of resources and the preservation of heritage.According to Ruben Etienne, promoter of SICCOM (International Exhibition on Information and Responsibility Concepts in Cameroonian Municipalities), a “one-size-fits-all” approach no longer works. He outlined a strategic framework for the industry:Clearly defining the niche whether cultural, religious, sporting, or gastronomic.Prioritizing rigorous research, precise audience targeting, and impact evaluation. Using authentic Cameroonian products as the primary magnet for international travelers.Etienne noted a critical gap: despite immense potential, tourism communication remains a weak link, calling for a deeper integration of qualified professionals within hotels and tourism enterprises. However,Jean Emmanuel Minko, a researcher in hospitality policy, introduced the concept of “Globalized” Hospitality. This innovative model bridges the gap between international standards and local authenticity. “Globalization integrates environmental sustainability and community empowerment, ensuring Cameroon competes globally without losing its soul.” Jean Emmanuel Minko.

From Media to ManagementThe workshop highlighted several structural challenges and proposed solutions:Yann Anoko (GM, Seme Beach Hotel) Argued that the media still lacks a deep understanding of the tourism sector, hindering effective storytelling.Jean-Baptiste Bamamba (President of Tourism Communicators Network)Stressed that promotion is the engine of the industry. He advocated for a structured annual calendar of cultural events to maintain public engagement. Also, the ambition extends beyond mere brochures. Stakeholders are moving toward a multi-disciplinary collaborative model involving:To craft compelling narratives. To ensure infrastructure and policy support. To bring fresh, digital-first perspectives to the sector. The ultimate goal is to transform tourism into a primary driver of economic and social development, making Cameroon a leading, accessible, and responsible destination on the African continent.
