The system that went operational on January 2 is part of the Douala Port strategies in embracing modern technology, it will not only enhances its operational framework but also positions itself as a leading hub in regional trade, paving the way for a new era of efficiency in maritime logistics.LIENGU ETAKA ESONG On January 2, the non- intrusive cargo inspection operations (scanning system) of the Ports of Douala- Bonaberi went operational. The Douala Port is experiencing a significant transformation as it introduces a new, on-site scanning system aimed at improving operational efficiency and enhancing security measures. The new system has streamlined processes, allowing quicker unloads and improved communication between customs and transportation agencies. The new scanning system has replaced previous fixed scanners, enabling a double transaction process that ensures swift checks of containers’ seals and types. This advancement means that containers can now be scanned immediately after unloading, reducing waiting times significantly, operational staff expect unload and scan time to drop significantly During a visit to see how the new operations was on going on January 2, Cyril Ayinda director of Operations at Container Terminal Management (RTC) emphasized the importance of security, stating that the scanning process must not interfere with commercial operations. “Improved monitoring means cargo can now be accompanied by real-time data, allowing customs officials to conduct evaluations promptly without delays. As a result, the port aims to prevent congestion and waiting times that previously plagued operations” he stated As the Douala Port continues to modernize, it faces stiff competition from neighbouring ports. As a result Mr Ayinda acknowledge the need for a strong performance, emphasizing the importance of maintaining efficient operations to keep pace with rivals. The new system is expected to enhance performance metrics, creating a more attractive environment for shipping companies and their clients. Mr Ayinda laid emphasis on the fact that they were focusing on local expertise in implementing these changes. He highlighted that all engineers, mechanics, and operators involved in the project are Cameroonian, showcasing local talent in the maritime industry. This approach not only boosts employment but also fosters innovation. Meanwhile Youaguissi Tagne Emmanuel ICT expert at Transatlantic added that with increasing commercial activity, security has become a top priority.

He said the integration of artificial intelligence in the scanning process allows for immediate data capture, ensuring that no container passes through without undergoing the necessary checks. This heightened security measures aims to protect the integrity of the cargo and maintain the port’s reputation.on.The operational enhancements at Douala Port mark a significant step toward modernization. As the port continues to adapt to changing technologies, it holds the potential to significantly reduce operational delays and improve overall efficiency.Port authorities are optimistic that the advancements will help maintain Douala’s status as a key transit hub for regional trade, enabling it to compete effectively on the global stage. The new scanning capabilities reflect Cameroon Government’s commitment to operational excellence, enhanced security, and local engagement, within the Ports of Douala- Bonaberi thus positioning it for a bright future in the ever-competitive maritime industry.
