The drop in the price of pepper has prompted a search for declines in the prices of other essential goods.

Douala City dwellers are currently enjoying the availability and affordability of pepper .Yellow and red peppers have become the unexpectedly affordable staples of the bustling food scene. Markets have witnessed a significantly reduced prices for these vibrant vegetables, making them one of the cheapest items available. However, this newfound affordability has sparked conversations among residents, who are eager to see other essential food items follow suit.In recent weeks, the prices of red and yellow peppers have dropped, with some vendors selling a 5 litter bucket for CFA 500. Pepper for CFA 50 can prepare meals for a house of 5 for at least five days. Madam Anastasia Fokam said pepper is in season and that harvest was good this year. She added that a bag that they sometimes buy for CFA 25000 is now sold between CFA 7000 to CFA 10 000 reasons for the drop in price. “ The quality of pepper is very good this year, the pepper is very hot and has good flavour “ she added. “I can’t believe how cheap they are now,” said Amina, another vendor. “They add flavor to any dish, but we need more than just peppers to make a complete meal.”Douala City dwellers are expressing their hopes that the price drop for peppers might signal a broader trend of lower food costs. Many residents in Douala are feeling the pinch of inflation, with staples like rice and beans remaining stubbornly expensive. “We expected that if one thing became cheaper, everything else would follow,” remarked Noella, a house wife. “But it seems like just the peppers are on sale, and they can’t replace the essential ingredients we need.”Despite the excitement surrounding the cheap peppers, there’s a sense of urgency among residents to advocate for lower prices on other staple foods. “These peppers are a wonderful addition to our diets, but they can’t substitute for the basics,” said Jesica . She equally regretted that she lacks storage facilities to dry and store up the pepper for future use.
