In the face of rising tensions and potential violence surrounding the electoral process in Cameroon, the South West North West Women’s Task Force (SNWOT) has issued a powerful statement urging all stakeholders to respect democratic principles and prioritize the safety of civilians. In a release signed by the National Coordinator of SNOWT Madam Clotilda Andiensa Waah on Sunday October 26 , they raised concerns on reported cases of massive electoral fraud and the tragic death of a young woman, Zouhaira Hassana, during protests in the North. Her death underscores the suffering experienced by women and girls in the Anglophone Regions, which has endured nearly a decade of conflict.

As such SNWOT’s demand for peace is not a call to silence legitimate grievances or overlook human rights violations. Instead, it reflects the collective experience of women who have borne the brunt of the ongoing turmoil. The emotional and economic costs of conflict have left many exhausted, having repeatedly rebuilt their homes and cared for displaced families. The coalition emphasizes that violence has never solved Cameroon’s political challenges and stresses the urgent need for a different approach.SNWOT firmly denounces all forms of violence—structural, systemic, and direct. Each type of violence results in loss, grief, and trauma that reverberates throughout communities. In light of this, the task force calls on the government to take immediate action:-Learn from the Anglophone Crisis:The government must draw lessons from past conflicts to prevent further escalation.- Provide Evidence-Based Responses: Clear and transparent responses to electoral grievances are essential for rebuilding trust.- Engage in Dialogue:An immediate and inclusive dialogue with all stakeholders is crucial for addressing concerns and fostering a peaceful resolution.- Uphold Rights and Dignity: The government must prioritize the rights, dignity, and safety of all citizens. The statement also addresses political leaders, urging them to communicate clearly and responsibly. Leaders are called upon to reject incitement, denounce hate speech, and promote peaceful dispute resolution. Meanwhile, the youth are encouraged to engage constructively and peacefully, advocating for a vision of a just Cameroon. The task force highlights the importance of restraint and professionalism among security forces in managing demonstrations, emphasizing the need to prioritize de-escalation and the protection of human life. Moreover, the international community is urged to support mediation efforts, inclusive dialogue, and the protection of fundamental human rights in Cameroon. With political courage and a collective commitment to dialogue and understanding, Cameroon can mitigate further harm and work towards a future where conflicts are resolved through negotiation and justice, rather than bloodshed. The urgent call from the SNWOT serves as a reminder that the path to peace requires collective effort, respect for democratic principles, and a steadfast commitment to protecting all citizens, especially the most vulnerable. As the nation stands at a crossroads, it is critical that all voices are heard, and that the pursuit of peace and justice remains at the forefront of Cameroon’s future.
