The Women International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA) visited schools in Douala to encourage young girls to pursue careers in the maritime industry.

As part of the celebration of the international day of women in the maritime, some school girls have been encouraged to take up professions within the maritime industry. This initiative was part of the International Day of Women in Maritime celebrations.The WISTA women visited schools such as Presbyterian Comprehensive Secondary School Lendi and Bridge College, encouraging girls to explore opportunities in the maritime sector. They highlighted that only 2% of women are currently part of the maritime workforce and aimed to improve this number by inspiring younger girls to join the profession.The team raised awareness about various maritime careers, including engineering, nursing, captains, pilots, cooks, accounting, and decking. They also educated the girls on the training required for maritime jobs.

The President of WISTA Cameroon, Madam Etape Mabel Sumbong, explained that they had planned activities to raise awareness, empower female professionals, and promote inclusivity in the sector.The International Day for Women in Maritime, observed on May 18, celebrates and recognizes women’s contributions to the maritime industry.
