A PhD thesis defense recently took place at the Faculty of Law and Political Sciences, Department of International Relations and Conflict Resolutions, University of Buea, on Tuesday, February 18. The core of the defense was an examination of the role of humanitarian response during conflicts.
Humanitarian crises are increasingly alarming across national borders, necessitating instant humanitarian responses from multiple states and humanitarian actors. This was the motivation behind Dr. Miriam Enow Etaka’s thesis, which critically examines the role of humanitarian response and the Anglophone conflict in Cameroon. Specifically, the thesis analyzes the International Rescue Committee (IRC) in the North West and South West Regions.

Dr. Enow Etaka emphasized that humanitarian crises are escalating daily across Cameroon’s national borders, requiring immediate responses from multiple states and humanitarian actors. Recent studies have shown that international responses to humanitarian emergencies often lack contextual knowledge and convening power to work effectively with state actors.
Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948).
The research findings revealed that most NGOs, including IRC, are involved in multiple activities, often resulting in shallow implementation. The findings also disclosed a lack of transparency. To address these issues, the thesis recommends that IRC focus on fewer activities at a time, ensuring transparency and accountability.

The president of the jury, Professor Yenshu Emmanuel Vebon, commended the relevance of the topic, stating that it will assist humanitarian bodies and the government in carrying out humanitarian actions in conflict zones. He praised the candidate’s methodology, theory selection, and feasible recommendations, earning Dr. Enow Etaka an excellent grade.
