Third National Survey:Data Collection for the Littoral Launched

The third national survey on employment and the informal sector to be carried out by the National Institute of Statistics has been launched in the littoral region. The launching ceremony on June 1st was a moment for the different stakeholders to drum up support for the data collection process to be successful. During the launching ceremony it came to the limelight that unemployment in Cameroon is still very high and stands at 75%. And those that are employed do not have good salary and live below the poverty line. With this, the government of Cameroon hope to change the tides and improve on the living standard of Cameroonians reason why the 3rd National Survey has been launched. The survey will go a long way to collect information from some 2, 026 household within the littoral region and specific information pertaining to employment will be fished out.

While launching the 3rd national survey in the littoral region, the Secretary General at the littoral governor’s office Aboubakary Haman Tchiouto disclosed that the data collected is very vital as it will assist the government and development partners to map out development strategies for Cameroon. He announced that the unemployment rate in Cameroon is still very high with women the hardest hit, 90% of the population in Cameroon is in the informal sector, the under employment rate in Cameroon, he went on, stands at 70.6% which affects 6.3million Cameroonians. He used the opportunity to call on all stakeholders to sensitise the population to open their doors to the different data collection teams.

 While presenting the 3rd National Survey, the representative of the Director General of the National Institute of Statistics Amougou Rene Aymar Bertrand said the data collection that started on May 10 will last till July 10. He added the objective of the survey is to evaluate and follow up the employment rate in the informal sector. On her part, the chief of Agency of the National Institute of  Statistic Madam Tchoua Christelle explained that all the  divisions of the littoral region will be involved.
