 Of recent cases related to inherence is said to be on the increase as most women   have been refused the right to inherit the property of their husbands, fathers or relatives. This situation has been the cause of conflict in the littoral region. As a result journalists have been drilled on female inheritance rights so as to further educate the public in order to reduce conflict in the society. Against this backdrop, members of the Cameroon Community Media Network CCMN Littoral have upgraded their skills in this domain during the chapter’s network meeting that took place on Friday May 7 at the Regional Delegation of Communication Littoral.

BarriterMbaiiga Etia Cecil

Contrary to stereotypes that the woman has no right to inheritance, Barrister Mbaiiga Etia Cecil explained that the woman has the right to inherit property be it that of her husband, father or any family member. She said like any other human, the woman has right to inheritance.She acknowledged that cases were bound were women have been denied inheritance either by their in-laws or siblings after the death of their husbands or fathers. The barrister at law who was the main resource person of the day took time off to edify CCMN littoral member on what law says as far as female inheritance is concerned.  She equally took time off to cite some portions of the law that give women the right to inheritance.

Knowledge gained will permit the CCMN members to educate the public on inheritance rights which will go a long way to minimize conflicts as far as inheritance is concerned.  During the network meeting members also revisited the CCMN general assembly that took place in Yaoundé in February. The regional coordinator, Regina Liengu Etaka also did a review on  the evaluation workshop on the Covid-19 response project that was sponsored by . She also used the opportunity Fondation Hirondelle  to implore the peace journalists to be solution oriented in their reporting.

The network meeting was a great opportunity for CCMN Littoral members to discuss on the theme of this year world press freedom day which was “information as a public good.
