Surviving Covid 19: Double Burden on IDPs

 Some Internally Displaced Persons-IDPs in the littoral region have expressed their frustration as to the fact that no Covid 19 response kit has reached them with the outbreak of the Covid 19 Pandemic. They made the declaration recently during the visit of a Civil Society organization, Bringing Hearts Together -BHeT to assess their needs. The IDPs who are based in Bonamome in the Douala IV sub has never receive government assistance talk less of items to fight against Covid 19.

 On the field, the executive director of BHeT Regina Liengu Etaka said their mission was to bring the   plight of the IDPs to the lime light for funders and donors to come to their aid. She recount that after a visit to Bonamome last year, the IDPs received assistance from an NGO on the ground.  After the visit she went on, BHeT will raise funds to assist the over 600 IDPs in Bonamome. She revealed that in the days ahead her organization will be organizing  a training session on “ “Sustainable livelihood for IDPs” during which they will give the IDPs basic tools so as to engaged in petit business in other  to sustain their  families.

  With the outbreak of the Covid 19 pandemic, the burden has been double as they grapple to survive out of home with the pandemic. For Kerin Ngkogdem  one of the IDPs, they have been surviving by the grace of God, She said with the outbreak  of the global pandemic,  they resolved to stay at home so as not to  contract the disease “ as a community of IDPs in Bonamome,  during the peak of Covid we usually send one person to buy our things, we equip him well and upon arrival  we made sure he doesn’t mix with people for some days .

 She said they contributed money and bought masks, buckets and soap as a means to keep Covid at bay, she was happy that no positive  case has been registered in their locality so far.
