This was during a guest talk organised on Friday October 30 in UB

Students of Department of Journalism and Mass Communication ( JMC) of the University of Buea, have been educated on how to go about reporting in order to promote peace. This was during a guest talk organised by the department to equipped the students with the necessary tools in peace journalism. In a presentation on “ The place of peace Journalism in crisis situation’ the guest speaker Madam Rosaline Akah Obah, National Coordinator, of the Cameroon Community Media Network, challenged the student journalists to choose words and images that is set out to build and not to destroy. She equally encouraged the students to be balanced in their reporting, in order not to injure another party. She made the students to understand that as journalists they have the power to make or mar.
The guest talk that was moderated by Dr. Kingsley Ngange, Head of Department of JMC was a rare moment to drill students on what is expected of them after school. Dr Kingsley Ngange enlivened the students; especially the freshmen and women, to put into practice, every single bit of the presentation and it will go a long way to better their career.
The guest talk comes at a time when journalists are faced with challenges in reporting crisis oriented stories. The initiative was highly appreciated by both the students and lectures of the department. One of the students, Anafor Agbor, said “I was really happy to be present at the guest talk. I have been educated on the importance of practicing peace journalism especially in crisis situations like the one we have now. Hearing this has inspired me to also pursue a journalism carrier oriented towards peace and community building, writing reports that will help impact society in a positive manner.”

It is worth mentioning that of late, students of JMC have benefited from the professional experience of two ex-students of the Department. Earlier on was Kum Leonard, Editor in Chief, of My Media Prime TV, who coached freshmen, on Maintaining Journalism Standards in the midst of Current Global Challenges. Many have appreciated the authorities of the department for the new initiative and prayed that more of such should happen.
