The customs department in Douala has multiplied its vigilance in the fight against the transportation of illicit commerce. This was evident recently when (HALCOMI) intercepted two trucks carrying over twelve thousand litters of fuel which was been transported from the South West region to the Littoral region. From the look of things the transporters used bags of salt dust to dissimulate the content in the truck, but with the vigilance of the customs officers they were able to intercept the trucks   and uncover the real content.

While presenting the illicit petrol to the press on Friday August 7, 2020, at the customs office in Bonanjo, the coordinator of the mission to Stop Illicit Commerce known by its French acronym HALCOMI, Vincent Nkengfua explained that they have as mission to put an end to the transportation of illegal commerce. He said the customs department set up HALCOMI to ensure that perpetrators of illicit commerce are brought to book. He used the opportunity to call all those involved in illicit commerce to desist and follow the legal procedure.  With the upsurge of illegal commerce the customs is also a victim as it deprived them from attaining their goals in terms of revenue collection. “We are out to create conducive environment for commerce and economic activities in Cameroon” Mr Vincent Nkengfua added. He further explained that they also have to protect the interest of legal companies who pay taxes to the government and have employed Cameroonians. He said the fuel will be handed to the regional delegation of Water and Energy for further analysis.

Illegal fuel

On his part the regional delegate of water and energy for the littoral, Mr Makonda Fidele, said the fuel will be analyzed after which, if of good quality, he said the fuel will be sold and the money put into government coffers. On the other hand, he went on, if the fuel is bad, it will be destroyed or sold to industrial companies who used such quality of fuel for their activities
