Cameroon: Anglophone crisis

SDF Pressurizes Government to seek Lasting Solutions

The main opposition party has threatened to withdraw its senators / parliamentarians from the upcoming November session.

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Social Democratic Front -SDF which is the leading political party in Cameroon has stated that the party will not take part in the upcoming municipal and legislative elections if the government does not come out with lasting solutions to the ongoing civil war in Cameroon. The party has also threatened to withdraw its parliamentarians and senators from both houses in the upcoming November sitting.

These resolutions were arrived at during the NEC meeting that took place in Douala on August 10, 2019. The meeting that was chaired by the National Chairman Ni John Fru Ndi was extended to all NEC members including shadow ministers, mayors, senators and parliamentarians.  The NEC meeting was the first after the national chairman was kidnapped and tortured by Separatist fighters a few weeks ago.

At the meeting members examined the present socio-political crisis in Cameroon.  Members agreed that the spiral of violence in the North West and South  West regions have led to disastrous consequences such as maiming, rape, torture, kidnapping, mass killings, destruction of schools, hospitals, houses and the razing of villages.  They established that these has caused thousands of causalities and displacements of persons who are refugees in neighboring countries and internally displaced. The party authorities sees this as a secrete assimilation agenda of Anglophones especially the annihilation of the education and common law systems.

A Press release that sanctioned the meeting indicated that he SDF will withdraw its parliamentarians from the national Assembly as well as its senators from the November sitting if the Cameroon government does not seek lasting solutions to the ongoing civil war. The release further reiterated that if the elections were to be convened and held under the present circumstances, the SDF will not participate and this will be tantamount to  dividing Cameroon in to two.

The SDF in the release called on CPDM senators and parliamentarians as well as mayors in the affected regions who have been using the crisis for political gains to desist. While acknowledging that the Anglophone problems has pushed separatist to take up arms, the SDF urged the separatist fighters to exercise restraint. The releases reminded French speaking Cameroonians that the Anglophone crisis is a national issue, which if not well managed  might lead to irretrievable separation of the country. The party equally condemned the irresponsible narrative pouring out from the diaspora which has  make the situation worst.
